Industrial Air is part of the MAT Industries, LLC group that manufactures and markets air compressors and air tools. LLC products are sold under the Powermate, Sanborn, Proforce, Industrial Air, and Industrial Air Contractor brands.
Being a gasoline driven compressor means that the CTA5090412 is a truly portable machine that can be run without the need for any sort of electricity supply, giving the user the freedom and portability that many contractors require. It also means that there is no risk of electrical shocks and no trip hazards from trailing wires.
Motor & Performance
The 5 Horsepower GC190 Honda built engine features an OHC (Overhead Cam) / OHV (Overhead Valve) assembly that provides a smoother engine operation, easier starting, low emissions and low fuel consumption.
The Honda engine also provides a high torque ratio across its wide RPM range that reduces engine speed reduction from sudden high loads. The uncomplicated build of the engine is another bonus as it reduces the need for excessive maintenance and servicing.
The noise level (89 Db) is average for a gas powered air compressor. Although, the machine is designed to be run outdoors and/or in remote areas the noise issue shouldn’t present much of a problem.
The low maintenance pump delivers 5.0 SCFM @ 90 PSI and 6.9 SCFM @ 40 PSI with a maximum pressure of 155 Psi, which is enough to run several low pressure air tools at the same time.
The pump is also oil free which means less maintenance for the user. When you combine that with the direct drive system and the two piece cooling system you have a winning combination that will deliver the goods time after time.
Build & Design
The design of the Industrial Air Contractor CTA5090412 is excellent. The motor and pump assembly sit in between the two pontoon style tanks which makes the whole construction very sturdy. The under frame of the compressor is manufactured from a square tubular steel and has four rubber feet that reduces vibration, stops noise and also prevents the machine from jumping around on the floor.
The lifting handles are well positioned and have rubber grips that prevent slipping when lifting and transporting and also help to make the machine even more rigid.
Weighing in at 74 lbs the CTA5090412 is not that heavy considering the gasoline motor and the pair of two gallon tanks. If you consider the machine is made from mainly steel and not plastic, has a 4 gallon storage capacity and also includes a gasoline engine then the weight to output ratio is excellent.
The whole design has been very well thought out and the light weight and small size (H 20” x W 21.5” x D 24.5”) makes the air compressor easy to lift, transport and store in small areas.
The controls are fairly typical for this type of portable compressor, they include:
Pressure Relief Valve which will open if the engine does not switch to idle when the pressure reaches the factory set level. This valve can be checked by pulling on the ring connected to the valve.
Tank Pressure Gauge that displays the pressure level of the air stored in the tanks.
Air Pressure Regulator that enables the user to increase or decrease the line pressure to the air tool that is in use.
Regulated pressure gauge that displays the outlet pressure to the air tool in use.
Single universal quick coupler.
This Industrial Air Contractor CTA5090412 Review would not be complete without mentioning the cons of the compressor.
- Price – Yes, it is on the expensive side, but you do get what you pay for and for a quality contractor grade compressor such as this you have to expect to pay slightly more.
- Compressor is louder (89 Db) than the electric machines – If you want the power and portability of a gas powered compressor then there are some tradeoffs, one of them being slightly more noise.
- No wheels – If you find that the machine is too heavy to carry around you can always buy a Dolly or Cart from Amazon to take the load.
