DEWALT DWFP55126 Air Compressor Review

The DEWALT DWFP55126 air compressor is a mid price range, portable compressor that would suit those looking for a home orDEWALT DWFP55126 pancake air compressor review light use machine that won’t break the bank.

With a 6 Gallon tank and maximum 165 Psi, the DEWALT should cope with a wide variety of DIY and small contractor jobs, such as tire inflation and supplying a single nail gun. However, the compressor probably won’t power a sander or auto spray gun for extended periods, but it does what it’s intended to do, and does it very well.

Motor and Pump:

The 0.9 Horsepower, belt driven motor fills the 6 Gallon tank from empty to 165 PSI in approximately 2 minutes 40 seconds, which is about right for the small motor and large tank size.

The long life, oil free pump produces an SCFM of 3.7 @ 40 PSI and 2.6 SCFM @ 90 PSI which is quite average for a mid-range compressor.

The 120V, 60Hz, 10 amps, high efficiency motor is designed for easy start up in cold weather or when using an extension cord.

Even though the DEWALT DWFP55126 air compressor features two ¼ inch couplers, in reality, it would struggle to power a pair of nail guns at the same time. However, having the ability to run two lines is handy if a single user regularly uses two different air tools, saving the need to keep coupling and uncoupling.

Duty Cycle:

DEWALT do state that “the air compressor pump is capable of running continuously. However, to prolong the life of your air compressor, it is recommended that a 50% – 75% duty cycle be maintained; that is, the air compressor pump should not run more than 30-45 minutes in any given hour”. Personally, I wouldn’t run a compressor of this size for more than 30 minutes in any one hour, running it continuously could and probably would lead to a premature breakdown of the machine. Therefore, we are going to list the duty cycle as 50 – 75%.

Break-in Procedure:

Although most of the previous DEWALT compressors required a break-in procedure that involved running the motor with the drain valve open for a set period of time, the DWFP55126 can be used straight out of the box.

Design & Build:

The DEWALT DWFP55126 air compressor weighs in at only 30 Lbs, which makes it light enough to carry around and load into a vehicle. The weight to tank size ratio is comparable with many of the pancake compressors on the market, such as the Porter Cable C2002.

A carry handle spans the top of the machine, and although it is made of plastic it is very strong and durable. When lifted the compressor is perfectly balanced under the handle, which, when combined with the light weight, makes it very easy to lift.

A protective console cover fits over the gauges and helps to keep them safe from accidental damage, the cover can be removed to allow for maintenance and repairs.

Draining the tank is done by way of a standard type of ball drain valve that is conveniently located at the side/rear of the machine. The rubber feet serve the dual purpose preventing movement and to protect any delicate surfaces such as floors etc.

On the side of the compressor is a cord wrap that is very handy if you regularly move the compressor.

Controls:

The tank pressure and regulated pressure gauges are recessed into the DEWALT-DWFP55126-Controls-plastic housing, they are clear, large and set a good angle to allow the user to see when standing over the compressor.

The tank pressure gauge shows the air pressure in the tank. The outlet pressure gauge shows the air pressure available at the outlet side of the regulator. The outlet pressure is controlled by the regulator valve situated under the gauges.

To the left of the pressure regulator valve is the safety valve which will “pop out” if the pressure switch does not shut off at its cut-out pressure setting. On top of the compressor is the on/off switch which is recessed into the plastic housing.

Noise:

While there are some very quiet air compressors on the market, at only 75.5 dBA the DEWALT DWFP55126 air compressor is less noisy than some of the comparable pancake tank models.

Pros:DEWALT_DWFP55126_compressor_review

165 max PSI 6.0 gallon tank
High efficiency motor
Low 75.5 dBA** noise level
High flow regulator and couplers
Long life oil free pump
30 lb weight makes unit easy to carry
2 universal couplers
Ball drain valve
Convenient cord wrap
Protective rubber leg covers

 Cons:

  • There was a problem with air leaking from the check valve on some machines, although, DEWALT do seem to have addressed this issue and corrected the problem.
  • No hoses or accessories are included and must be purchased separately.

Conclusion:

If you understand the limitations of this durable and robust pancake compressor, you won’t be disappointed with its performance.

Even though it does have a 6 Gallon tank it only has 0.9 Hp motor, which means it isn’t going to power high CFM requirement tools or two medium CFM tools at the same time. However, for those that are looking for a great DIY or low to medium use contractor compressor, the DEWALT DWFP55126 air compressor could be the ideal machine for you.
